Myopia in Hong Kong

Web.001Prevalence of myopia in Hong Kong is much higher than other countries, for example, it is three times higher than United States. From the Hong Kong Association of Private Practice Optometrists, number Hong Kong children with refractive error is still increasing. They believed that using electric visual devices, reading and writing would be the main causes. By combining the results of different studies, there are 30 and 74% of Hong Kong children and teenage respectively suffering from different kinds of vision problems.

How myopia would affect our eye’s health?

Myopia will affect our distance vision. This can be corrected by spectacles, contact lenses or even refractive surgery.
However,  high myopia (over -6.00) would also affect the internal structure of eyes and increase the risk of developing eye diseases like cataract, glaucoma, retinal degeneration, macular degeneration, retinal detachment. In order to prevent these, it is always important to control the progression of myopia at early stage.
